Piña Colada

Piña Colada cocktail.

If you’re not into yoga and like getting caught in the rain, then the Piña Colada is definitely for you.  Legend has it that a primitive version of this tropical cocktail was first invented by the notorious Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí as a morale booster for his crew.  The cocktail is the official drink of Puerto Rico and the United States ‘observes’ National Piña Colada Day every year on July 10th.  While this cocktail can be served either frozen or on the rocks, a traditional Piña Colada is served frozen.  The recipe below is for a Colada on the rocks, however, to make a frozen Colada all you need to do is combine the ingredients below in a blender and add a cup of crushed ice.  You can thank me later.

Here's the recipe:

  • 1oz white rum
  • 1oz coconut rum
  • 1oz coconut cream
  • 2oz pineapple juice
  • 1/2oz lime juice

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in shaker. Shake well.  Strain over ice into a hurricane or rocks glass.  Garnish with a pineapple slice, or a maraschino cherry (or both!)
