Spicy Mezcal Margarita
For this variation of the classic Margarita, the addition of mezcal and jalapeno slices provide extra layers of complexity to the cocktail. Mezcal adds subtly smokey undertones and the jalapeno provides an enjoyable kick. Overall, the cocktail is a delight to the senses on just about every level.
While tequila is made only from the agave tequilana plant, more commonly known as blue agave, mezcal can be made from any type of agave plant, of which there are many different species. During mezcal production, the agave plants are harvested and cooked in underground oven pits, which gives mezcal its unique smokey flavor.
Here’s the recipe:
- 1 ½ oz Reposado Tequila
- ½ oz Mezcal
- ¾ oz Cointreau
- ½ oz Lime Juice
- ½ oz Blue Agave Nectar
- 1-3 Jalapeno Slices (1 for mild; 2 for medium; 3 for spicy)
- Kosher Salt
Combine all ingredients in shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain over ice into a rocks glass. For salt on the rim - take a lime wedge and run the citrus side around the full rim of the glass. Lightly spread some kosher salt on a small plate. Take the glass and gently place it rim side down on the plate of salt. Move the rim around the plate until the rim is sufficiently covered in salt.
